Malgra: The Beginning

You can hear this song playing in space if you listen hard enough.

The deep void of space offered cold reassurance of her loneliness as she turned from the thick window and to her bed. It was "night" and she could feel the cold chill of hopelessness and despair creeping into her room yet again. She slid into bed with little comfort as she felt the cold arm wrap around her waist and the frostbitten lips softly press against her shoulder. She shivered and drew the covers closer around her, remembering the sunlight that was once from her true home, from Earth. She could remember the breezes and the smell of the soil and the way new grass tickled her feet in the spring. She could remember the panic of the last few days of her time at home before she and many others were packed into this metal casing and ejected off into space to continue life. She could remember how she felt when she was told that she and a large group of others were selected to go off into space, to "explore" and someday report back to Earth. She could remember the panic among her and the others as they watched Earth fall far behind them in the empty void called Space…

Is it bright where you are?
Have the people changed?
Does it make you happy you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame.
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain.

Behind her closed lids were the remembered images of an Earth that found itself collapsing in on itself; imploding with a resulting light show that was something that Michael Bay would have been impressed with if he were alive. She could remember the panicked screams within the large, cold prison with "Malgra" forever emblazoned on its side in big, bold, black letters. They could all remember the ensuing chaos until two leaders and their followers stood up and took control of the situation. She could remember how they assuaged their fears, how they helped things pass and smooth out. They stood and became the leaders of Malgra and helped everyone cope and begin to accept that Earth had just imploded and was gone. People were still uneasy, sure, but they grew used to life within the giant metal Malgra-tank.

Is it bright where you are?
Have the people changed?
Does it make you happy you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame.
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain.

Living within Malgra was not all that satisfying, though. Not all the way deep down in a person's heart of hearts. The technology was good enough to simulate the sun and its patterns, but there were no seasons. There were no birds, no butterflies, no bees. There was no grass and no trees and no warmth. Just cruel, cold metal. Everything within Malgra was made out of this heartless metal; smooth and dark, cold and biting. The interior of Malgra was grim and forever was there the underlying sense of foreboding of what would come next. The leaders, eventually, created smaller colonies to help split up the population within Malgra, but the growth of the population did nothing to ease the fear that humankind might die out after all.

Is it bright where you are?
Have the people changed?
Does it make you happy you're so strange?

And in your darkest hour
I hold secrets flame.
We can watch the world devoured in it's pain.

Malgra is all that is left of humankind and humanity. All hope and future for the civilization of humans is gone. At least, that is how the people of Malgra feel like. The tense unease of the new way of day to day life leave many attempting to accept the fact, but it is difficult. It is difficult when it seems everything is over. With Earth gone, all is over. There is nothing left. Nothing by Malgra and it's fledglings.

Earth's death was not the end: it was the beginning.

Malgra: Now

Malgra is, in short, a huge space colony that is the hub for smaller colonies and trade in what is left of the human race. It can be described easily as a huge, sprawling metropolis with everything a normal metropolis would have in it. Schools, colleges, banks, businesses, bars, strip clubs… It has your quiet day life and the perfect, raving night life. It has your tame groups of hooligans and your complex bands of gangs and other undergrounds.

But that is not all. All of these traits extend to the smaller colonies that come and dock off at Malgra to both regain supplies, trade and allow people out of and into whichever smaller colony happens to be docked at that time. Malgra is the bustling hub and the smaller colonies are all arms of this hub, each sharing characteristics of it. Malgra has the opportunity to become the next Earth.
